Off to Nashville / Memphis and Salt Lake City

So it’s official.

Next week I’ll be on travel to Tennessee to meet TN DOT. I’ll be in Nashville, Memphis and parts of eastern Arkansas. Hopefully I’ll be able to meet up with some old college friends at night. If you are an old college friend and are reading this and haven’t already heard about my trip, please get in touch with me so we can plan some time together.

The following week I’ll be in Salt Lake City meeting with developer team. It’s going to be a nice trip. I’ve worked out my two travel days to allow for roaming the city for the nights. I am looking forward to it and have already contacted Dooce to assist me in my travels. I hope she writes back. I wish I knew more people in Salt Lake City and knew what to do there.

And this time I get to take a DOT issued laptop. I imagine it will be a 386 16mhz type piece of poop. So hopefully it will not be a fast computer so I wont have the option of wasting my time with it for a few days.

In addition, I’ll be bringing my Nikon F100 with my f/2.8 lenses and a bunch of film. I hope to get back in to 35mm again. I think these travels will assist in that aspect of my life.

  • You know what i was wondering the other day… Why they ask you about film when they do the searches at airports. Do they still ask about it? I can’t remember. Do the XRAY machines do anything to it?

  • – Squatters Pub/Salt Lake Brewing Co. – kind of commercial, but decent food.

    – Desert Edge Brewey is in a shopping center, bleggggh. But they did have something called the LDS stout when I was there, which is kind of funny.

Best thing I’ve found in Salt Lake is hike. Not always easy in the winter, but there’s some great trails and I’m sure the local REI or some place like that is the palce to ask.

  • They do sometimes ask. With low ASA film you don’t really need to worry. 400 and below. When you get up to the 3200 it’s obviously more sensative. I’ve honestly never had a problem either way.

Thanks L – any idea about those weird drinking laws? Do you need a “sponsor” that I keep hearing about??? I’ll be staying right near the convention center… hope it’s not too ghetto.

  • there’s another brewery within walking distance of the downtown Best Western, near the Delta center, and it’s really nice (I can’t remember it’s name)

Urban legend alert! You can drink at a restaurant/brewery just fine, no “sponsor” needed. You can’t buy beer/etc at grocery stores, or maybe wholesale at all. And I can’t say I’ve ever seen an ABC store in Utah. 😉

Anyways, Utah has a normal liquor license procedure just like everyone else.

  • PS – there ain’t nothing “ghetto” about SLC, baby. 🙂

  • If DOT stands for Dept. of Transportation, you should know that Winn (the guy I married) worked for them for 3 or 4 years before quitting. He works for GDOT now. We got the inside skinny on the place.
