When I lived in Charlottesville, VA (rep!) years ago, we used to have these ferocious afternoon thunderstorms that would send tree branches crashing to the street and the power would go out for at least three hours or so. They were of such frequency that you could set your watch by them. I was just telling a co-worker how much I missed afternoon thunderstorms; they're such a rarity here in Mass...

at 6:40 this morning there was a moderately loud ‘boom’ heard outside - then the power went out for a few seconds - and nothing. it was weird.

The same thing happened here a couple weeks ago, complete with a massive flash (which was odd for such a relatively quiet boom). I thought I'd heard things and that it was just thunder 'n' lightning, but it was manmade, whatever it was.
