Top 10 Favorite Anthrax Songs

Back in the day, my good friend listened to a lot metal bands. Some good, many shitty. Aside from most of the metal he listened to, he introduced me to a lot of very cool diverse bands. Anthrax is the one I can still listen to and not completely cringe. Slayer, too.

Anthrax is a weird one. Their records were moderately serious yet had a funny side to them. They didn’t take themselves too seriously like the other three of the Big 4: Metallica (still bores me to death), Slayer (I do like them from time to time) and Megadeth (if constipation was musical, it would sound like Megadeth). It was impressive that Anthrax didn’t always wear black, too. They wore neon shorts from time to time. That took balls in the mid 80s when being “men” was being “metal.”

The main aspect that totally turned me on to Anthrax was their genre bending. In 1987 they blended rap and metal with “I’m The Man,” and later collaborated and toured with Public Enemy in the early 90s. This even pre-dates Faith No More by nearly two years with The Real Thing in 1989. The nu-metal industry would not be the way it is today without this seminal metal band.

Rock fists in the air.

  • I remember “I’m the man”. Loved it! I guess I’m kinda main stream…cuse I loved ‘Black Lodge’, too.

  • oh man… excellent list. I’m still a pretty big fan of Anthrax, myself. If you get a chance, check out The Greater of Two Evils – it was sort of like an early-years best-of… but with all of the tracks re-recorded with John Bush on vocals. pretty decent. I have to admit that, even though I listened to Belladonna-Anthrax all through middle-school and high-school, I was completely blown away when they released White Noise. Bush remains the better vocalist, imho (less of the operatics) – though the song-writing quickly bottomed out after his first album with the band. Among The Living and White Noise are pretty much tied for my favorite Anthrax album.

  • Wow – this is one top ten I never saw comin’. 🙂

  • Great list… but nothing from Sound of White Noise?

  • anthrax was one of my main faves before i transitioned to lounge tracks. i never heard or gave a chance to white noise. but yeh, i had a warm spot for anthrax; i always maintained that ‘i’m the man’ was the first rap/metal… for years. people did not reckagnize.

  • I miss Anthrax. I was never the same after hearing “I’m The Man,” and I can still remember playing that CD-single on repeat again and again and again in high school. I still remember the awesome cover art for “Spreading the Disease” and “Among the Living.” Gave me the chills.
