Top 10 Favorite Smashing Pumpkins Songs

Well, Billy’s done it again. He’s releasing another record, Zeigteist, today. This time, I believe, with only Jimmy as the other original member. Sadly, I am less than interested. In fact, I don’t know of a Smashing Pumpkins song I listened to post-Mellon Collie. I never even purchased Adore.

But the fact remains that from 1989-1996 Billy and the Smashing Pumpkins or rather the Billy Corgan Experience released a shit-load of great material.

I first heard the Pumpkins on the Singles Soundtrack. It came out the Summer of 1992. I bought it because it had grunge greatest hits all over it. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam. All the Top 5 bands of the era. There was this song at the end that stood out for me. Not to mention the 3 minutes of crazy-ass feedback. It was Drown and it was by the Smashing Pumpkins. I mentioned it to my friend Karin that I really liked this cut. She then got a cassette tape from her brother. It had some Sex Pistols record on side one and the Pumpkins’ GISH on side two. I took it with me to summer camp that year. I wore the shit out of it. Then the following summer Siamese Dream broke and the rest is history.

In January of 1996, I was privileged (Thanks Jessie!) to see them at the grand-opening of the new 9:30 Club in DC. It was the 3rd city of a 3-city tour to test out the MCIS tour. 45 minutes of an acoustic set and then and hour and a half of a massive-electric-rock-your-balls-off set. It forever changed my life, but it never got better than that night.

  1. Drown (Singles soundtrack)
  2. Bury Me (Gish)

  • . . . but it never got better than that night.

Maybe it would have gotten better tonight, tonight!

  • I am stunned not to see I Am One on that list. That was the frickin’ startup sound on your shitty Gateway for like all of 1993 to 1995. Back when the sound file would have been the largest file on the whole PC.

Interesting list though. I’ve got the same rough trajectory with them, though I came in more with Siamese Dream. My Top 10 would be more like:

    Cherub Rock
    I Am One
    Sweet Sweet

So what, like 2 overlaps? Both of which are like 10 minutes long?
In a lot of ways Pumpkins were a fun bridge into the serious Prog Rock Genesis and Dream Theater stuff I fell in love with like a year later.

  • Also, new They Might Be Giants album today. Give some love to one of the longest continuously working alternative bands around!
And hell, they’ve got another album coming out this summer. Prolific bastards.
You two should pick up some of their kids albums for the kid. Fun stuff.

  • Hi, I came here from and liked this entry. My older brother introduced me to Smashing Pumpkins a long time ago – so nostalgic. I agree, everything after Mellon Collie is substandard compared to the Smashing Pumpkins’ earlier works.

  • the Singles soundtrack was one of the single best recordings in the 90s. Drown is probably my favorite SP song, and Breathe is by far my favorite Pearl Jam song. The rest, as they say, is history. Nice post.

  • So, a-hem.

Billy Corgan is a prat. A wanker. A stupid willy and SUCKED ass. I saw them on the last Lapalooza (yes, I am that old…) and they did ONE f’ing song, walked off –well HE did and left the band standing there. 10 minutes go by and he comes out and they do 2 more songs which actually sound pretty rad and then…BOOM! They storm off again.

Pain in the ass. The Beastie Boys were awesome as was Pfunk so it was not a totally lost day. AND I talked to Luscious Jackson who ruled.

haha. You have a blog too.

  • This seemed too cute not to post:

Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Smashing Pumpkins

    1. Today
    2. Tonight, Tonight
    3. Cherub Rock
    4. Galapagos
    5. 1979
    6. Disarm
    7. Blank Page
    8. Try, Try, Try
    9. Soma
    10. By Starlight
    11. Farewell and Goodnight

Evidently, this is part of a whole series, with other stuff from U2, The Cure, Radiohead, Bjork, The Beatles, Zepplin, Nirvana, etc.

  • I’m a HUGE SP fanatic. Rotten Apples is my number 1
