It depends on the state. In MD, they allow a religious exemption, but not a personal/philosophical one. That said, you do not have to qualify your religious beliefs.

So far, Lily has not had any vaccinations. We've felt this was a responsible choice given that she's breastfed and not in daycare (i.e. her immune system is bolstered by my antibodies and she's not exposed to the germs of many other kids). We'll continue to re-evaluate this decision in the context of her health and our lifestyle as she gets older. And, by the way, our pediatrician has been very supportive of our decisions. She's wonderful.

Our main concern with the vaccinations is not mercury, since it has largely been removed from childhood vaccines (except flu), but rather aluminum. There's an excellent article here (http://www.mothering.com/articles/growing_child/vaccines/aluminum-new-thimerosal.html) that discusses the lack of research that's been done on aluminum as an additive to childhood vaccines.

I don't think it has to be a religious exemption -- I think you can even file personal or philisophical exemptions. I'm partially speaking out of my ass here, but I thought I read that somewhere.

So does this mean that you are not getting Lily vaccinated?

Regardless of position, aren't you still stuck with the issue that your kid can't go to public schools without an up-to-date vaccination record?
