yes, that is a $10 silvertone and my god, mat in purple tights, never thought that was possible! It’s funny how you can associate different songs or bands with different people you know.

Phish/JSBX/Luscious Jackson – Bennie. He was my closest boy-friend in College. We used to smoke ourselves silly the afformentioned bands. Still to this day, I will think of him when I hear these bands.

Jane’s Addiction/Nine Inch Nails – Becca. I think I got her in to Jane’s and she got me in to Nine Inch Nails. It was a beautiful thing. To this day I still love Jane’s Addiction. They are timeless.

Soundgarden/Anything slightly metal – Jordan. He was the guy in 8th grade making me mix tapes with Slayer and Megadeth and Metallica when I was a little less focused in my music as he was. I listened to Jane’s Addiction and a lot of hair metal bands and the Beatles and the Stones. I always thought metal was for lost souls. We also covered Jesus Christ Pose. I am still sore from those 4 limb destructions. It’s bizzare how his musical tastes affected me. I think he taught me what not to look for in music. He did teach me about hi-bias cassettes. God bless him.

Led Zeppelin/Lemonheads/Ned’s Atomic Dustbin/anything of Punk decent that isn not Green Day sounding – Karin. She taught me to be a free thinker. Or maybe brought it to my attention, cos she never inflicted it on me. It’s all about emotions and each band had it at one point or another. She is prolly one of my oldest friends. And she is the one that will call me out of the blue. That, I love!

Pearl Jam/Dinosaur Jr/Smashing Pumpkins/Soul Coughing/Portishead – Jessie Belle. Another smoking thing. We’d always get stoned and go driving off in to DC. Sometimes just sitting on the side of the road with a joint in our hands. Or late at night with a hammock in her backyard with a little stereo. Fun times were had. And the music was there to see us through. Never got the Pearl Jam fixation. Well, at least she grew out of it. There was also that Soul Coughing connection she had. Which was a good in for me. Funny how i still talk to some of them and she doesnt talk to that one person anymore. Another girl who makes a point to keep in touch with me…props.

Anything 70s/the Police/Joni Mitchell/the Samples/Dylan/MCIS – Zut. Now this girl prolly had the most influence on my musical tastes than anyone ever. She was the one who turned mix tapes in to an art. I remember in college taking the bus to Boston to visit her parents and i somehow rigged the CD player to output two headphones. We listened to ARE YOU NORMAL? by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. Oh yeah, and once she came to my dorm room to hear the, at the time, new Pumpkins CD. We got thru disc one, but “fell asleep” by disc two. To this day we’ve never listened to disc two together.

Richard Marx/Dream Theatre/Genesis – John. I spelled his name for almost a year knowing him in HS. He also was in my band. He wore a Richard Marx tshirt. I couldnt and still cant tell if it was a joke. He also made liking Dream Theatre acceptable. Once, he locked me in his room for almos 3 hours trying to convince me that Warrant’s guitarists were the next Mozarts. Bizzare. He also said he didnt drink cos he had a drinking problem when he was younger. In college he confessed he was full of shit. Thought that was amusing.

U2/The Bealtes/Bikini Kill Sara. She introduced me to U2 at age 14. We also would talk until the wee hours of the night saying how much cooler Lennon was than McCartney. In our yearbook we signed out little “ad” as: Perry Farrell and Kathleen Hannah. We were cute. She also was one of the first girls in the area to get in to the girlie punker stuff. Asked me to the Homecoming dance freshman year. In fact a few girls asked me. I only went with one. I miss freshman year. Why dont girls ask me out like that now!

70s Funk/ELO – Feetnik. After being incredibly overtaken by her fashion sense, I soon found out her love for 70s funk music. I had never met anyone so loving of a style of music before. She knew everything about that sort of music. The irony was she was the white-ist whitey ever. Pastier than I. I didnt matter, she knew her shit. Very cool. Little green bag. And Evil Woman by ELO.

Hey,
Back to seasonal work, we do think of you and miss
you. Got to see B. today. He seems to be doing
okay. Shila and her friend Jaris (who is working for
NHA) and I have made it our mission to find B. a
women. They are setting him up to night with one of
thier friends who just ended a relationship last
winter. She is from Challis and works for the Forest
Service in Mackay so who knows. Other than that nothing new same ole same ole. What is going on in your Life?
S.

Good fucking question. What IS going on in my Life?

I can give you the general; like This Weekend:

–saw Pearl Harbor. Less kissy kissy, more history, please. It was Titanic set in Hawaii. Eff that.

–Went to eat yummy Chinese Food with an ex-roommate. Analysis: Her ex-boyfriend is a dick and she should move up to DC! Yeah! Screw LA! LA Is for SUCKERS! Except for Opus and Jessica.

–Went to a party of old friends, ex-radio-station geekies from college, and a lot of people wearing horn-rimmed glasses. Uber alternative.

–Slept in late, ate good food. Ben & Jerry’s.

That was This Weekend. It was a nice, dull, elle weekend.

(Sidenote: about the above quoted email. I am HAPPY they are setting B. up. Really. I am HAPPY. Ecstatic, even. Joyful. Maybe he will find a nice girl he can settle down with. Maybe he will be happy, too. Maybe. Maybe he will be as happy as I am, maybe he’ll have some strange feeling I’ve been having lately (call it nesting instincts) that…well… maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to wake up next to the same person for the next 60 years. Maybe he’ll find all that in a girl that works for the Forest Service in Challis. She’ll be his Sig Other. Maybe she’s a hippie with a heart of gold. All I know is, please don’t send me emails about this. Relationships are hard enough without having updates on ex-things dating lives. I can’t care.)

january from workFriday night I went to see Autechre with Addy and his Drama. She was really nice for a drama girl. She seemed to know everyone at 930 Club. She seemed perfect for him. Not really my type, as I told him, but I think she could be really good for him if she stays on target. We’ll see. Autechre was really interesting, but it was really hard to watch two dudes sitting at Macs at the back of the stage. The silly raver kids were there. They definately took away from the show. Their light sticks were more annoying than Elvis from the mid 70s. Ick. Made me wanna shove their E-totin’ light sticks up their “rollin'” asshole. Anyways. I got really antsy at that show, one of the first times at such an interesting band. Funny, how I wanted to actually take pictures there, as well. Oh well. 40 shots of two dudes at computers would look really interesting, I tell you.

Saturday was primarily spent recording with THEBOBGREENE and JOE. This was the first time recording someone other than me in SKYLAB. It was great, cos he brought his own drums and zillions of little child toy intruments. Lots of percussion primarily. Anyways. He layed down a handfull of drums that will eventually become MONS III songs. I did simple micing techiniques. Just two overheads (stereo) and a nice bass drum mic. Oh, and a mic at the far corner for a ‘room’ mic. That mic is always key. Add life to dull recordings all the time. So we did little experimenting, however we did over saturate the bass drum on one track that seemed to make it sound like there was a bass tone attached to the bass drum. Just like a trigger. Very cool sounding. And the last “song” we did was a 20 minute jam almost. THEBOBGREENE layed down a beat from the Casio SK1 hooked up to flangers, wah wahs, and a delay pedal, while I manned the Juno 106 and JOE had the JP-8000. It was mayhem! Then after we layed that all down we upped the levels on the room mics and had a free for-all percussion jam, with every bit of percussion you could imagine. Tambourines. Triangles. Hand drums. Sand Blocks. This “spring” drum. And even a 1-octave xylophone. It was like a hippie jam. Haha. I am very happy that I sorta know what I am doing when it comes to home recording. I guess I learned something in my years of recording on 4-tracks. Nothing will ever beat that old Tascam 424. Ever.

Today I spent the majority of the day laying down overdubs to THEBOBGREENE’s drums. Layed down synth lines to almost every song. And sorta sequenced one bass line with an arpeggiator. Since THEBOBGREENE’s time on drums is very pristeen, I could match the tempos and let it rip. I even got to break out the Theremin for that one too. Very cool sounds are coming my way. Then after recording I got a call from Jessie Belle. She was in town for the long weekend. It’s always great to hear from her. You can always count on her to keep in touch. So we went out to dinner at the CORNER BAKERY in Bethesda and then saw MEMENTO. This movie was litterally done backwards. It was really interesting to see it done that way. I little confusing and lots questions, but still an interesting concept. Anyways. Afterwards we went to a bar. The Four P’s. That was the place my sister used to go during and after college. Bizzare. I can’t remember the last time I just went to a bar to get a drink with out seeing a band. It’s always so fun with Jessie Belle. She’s one of those girls that if everything is going wrong she’ll make it better. Not sure how, but she has that power if she knows it or not. It’s a wonderful “safe” feeling, that no one else i’ve met gives to me. Plus my parents love her like their own. My mother said today “Jessie Belle would give me grandkids” – As if i’ll never find anyone to settle down with. She does have this slight wish that Jessie Belle and I would settle down together. It’s very cute. It must be the hair. And maybe she knows something I dont. Who knows? Anyways. I am tired and am going to sleep. Oh, and the dude at the bar played Jenny 867-5309. That was cool.
