The San Francisco Treat

Rockaway beach - San Francisco

I finally made it out to the left coast. San Francisco. Oakland. Whatever you want to call it. We flew in to Oakland. JetBlue rules. We stayed in Oakland for 5 days. At Tolya and Otto’s new house. But everyday we went to San Francisco. They say Oakland is a city, but to me it seemed like a suburb city. Similarly to that of Silver Spring or Bethesda. In relation to DC. Regardless they both were great. And we had a blast.

The San Francisco area, or hell, the West Coast is pretty friendly. And not that fake southern friendly. It was genuinely sincere. Cars would stop at crosswalks to let you cross the street. People that bumped in to you would stop and apologize and even give you eye contact. Random people would simply just stop and chit chat with you while waiting on the side of the road for your significant other to pay the cashier. But in reality it was really nice to get back to the East Coast where we have no time for patience. It’s another world. And it’s nice. It’s just different. Kind of bordering on bizzaro world. But I could deal with it. Hell it was a lot like where we live in DC. Emily always made the similarity between Berkeley and Takoma DC. And I really see it now. Of course, we just need a kick ass record store. Which is entirely possible.

So yeah, we did a ton of shopping. A ton! And we drove down the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Almost to Santa Cruz. It was beautiful. Very much different than the East Coast coast lines. Once back in San Francisco, of course our first stop was to Good Vibrations. First things first. And I hit up Amoeba Records both in Berkeley and in San Francisco. And only spent $200 but did get a Karlheinz Stockhausen record. I guess they finally reissued a bunch of hit CDs. Bummer they were all imports. I only have a few more record stores to hit up before I can die happy. I didn’t see Meagan there, however. I haven’t seen her in years, but thought on a whim I’d see her there. We also got a ton of clothes and even picked up this great Italian hanging lamp. It’s cigar shaped but in four sections held together with silver loops. It will go great in the corner of the living room next to the green couch. Pictures of the lamp to come as we had it shipped.

We probably spent too much money on shopping and what not, but hell, it was our mini-vacation and we deserved it. Hells yeah. Why not?! Shopping is good for the soul. It’s true and one of the best things we picked up was a suspended ceiling suspended lamp by Foscarini designed by Jozeph Forakis called Havana. Ours is in the Giallo Crema variation. I also picked up a canvas messenger bag by Hideo Wakamatsu from an over zealous salesman.

It was great staying with Tolya and Otto and meeting their new puppy, Oscar. I had met them before a bunch of times. We even had lunch and/or dinner and went to their wedding, but I really didn’t get to know them until this trip. So that was nice. They are both such great people and eat great food! So generous and complete with style.
