they never even played it

jessie's tv, but backwardsUpon going to the 930 Club to see Semisonic, i was stopped about half way down Georgia Avenue. There was a huge fire truck and about 5 police cars and an ambulance. It was loud and lights were flashing every which way. There was a detour. With my nastily awful sense of direction I decided to make that fateful right turn to nowhereland knowing full, that I was to get lost. I actually made it thru that detour and upon getting back on Georgia i turned around to see what had happened. It looked like the Metro Bus hit a person. Ick…I think they killed him/her. It didnt look good. Sheesh.

So after that, I got to 930 Club a-ok. As I always do. It’s pretty damn easy to do tho. I parked my car and put my camera in the trunk. I wasnt sure if i’d get on the list for a photo pass or not. If i did however i’d have just gone back there for it. Turns out i didnt. I did meet up with my boy Justin and his soon to be wife. I have know her thru him for close to 10 years. We have prolly only spoken 5 sentances to each other. Tonite we got to chat tho. It was neato posquito. Funny too, cos the opener “Pete Yorn” played in the concerence room at DC101 just a few weeks ago. He was alright. After the first 3 songs I got antsy though. He did do a wonderful intro to one of his songs. It was DANCING IN THE DARK by Springsteen. Pete was from NJ, so it only made sense. It was too bad that the only really good part of his set was the cover. I sure am a sucker for that blue-collar rock from NJ. Bon Jovi here i come! Oh yeah, and that dude from FAILURE produced Pete’s record. Not that that means much, but I thought it interesting.

So Semisonic finally hits the stage. Opened with one of their older singles. But not Closing Time. I really wanted to hear that first, for some reason. I know they’d never do it. But I sorta wanted to see if they played it first how many people would have left after it. The sound was great. It was loud, but not too loud. I prolly should have had ear plugs in, but i really didnt need them. It was a nice comfortable level. The only sound complaint was lack of backup vox. And with this band it seems they had a lot and a good need to backup vox in the mix. The rest of the set was predominately new songs. The new songs are half good, and half really cheesy. Cheesy in the lyrics that is. Carole King actually cowrote and played piano on one song on the new one. Too bad she didnt play the show tonite, cos that I would have liked to see. Funny thing is, is halfway thru one of the mellow-er (enter: ballad) tunes, the bassist wandered to the back of the stage and the singer took the bass. Then the guy turns on what appeared to be a theremin. Woah! It sure was. Theremins have become so popular. Mainstream rock is using them. Weird man. Weird. So after 60 mins in to the set, still no Closing Time. After many Spinal Tap references and no hope of Closing Time, we decided to bust it, and go home. So yeah, they never even played it. They may have for the trite “Encore” but I will never know. Speaking of Encores, I want to start filming a movie. I want to document what happens after the band’s first set and the conversations that happen when/if they decide to do an encore. I think it could be very interesting…but alas, no Closing Time. Who’s gonna take me home?

two dollar whore

I just got done with the Millionaires show. It’s been like 10 weeks or so since there was a Millionaire winner. It’s getting pathetic. I mean I’d never be able to get those $200 questions, but give me a $250,000 or $500,000 and I am fine. It’s those simple little idiom questions that always get me. There was one about the NASA spacecraft that landed on that Astroid in February. I don’t even recall hearing about it…I think I overheard it while making dinner one nite. Weird huh? Most people I know make fun of me for watching it. I watch it pretty religiously. Almost as bad as Melrose Place. For Melrose I’d not accept phone call though. That was the shit for me. You couldn’t fuck with me then. Millionaires is almost there, but still. It’s just funny, everyone says the questions are so easy…but it’s all relative. Funny thing is, is that I hated the show when I first saw it. It took about 6 months for me to get in to it…anyways…

Today the boss took me and one of the new guys out for lunch. It was pretty cool. Shooting the shit about work is pretty odd, but I guess that is what people do. We got to talk about the future of all the stuff we’re doing. It was a lot of fun and I got lunch for free and go to get out of the studio for a few hours. I think some of the people from LA are coming out next week…fun fun fun. Oooooh and tomorrow is Semisonic…I still only know that one single from the radio that had that cool piano part. Closing Time is the name of it, I think. So yeah, the band will be doing some songs/interview in-studio, and then at night. I hope they are nice. Cos if they’re not, I will set my flash to red eye reduction and strobe their eyes until they are blind as a bat. Oh yeah, and then after I got back from lunch I came back to work and did a little work…rendered some new DC101 logos for some new T-Shirt designs and then some of the interns (Skeletor included) and the Promotions people took the tank out…that is just too much fun…it’s just an oversized car with a little armor and we go nuts…I love it…

Which reminds me…I just recalled that time when I saw that Saturday Night Live skit/ad for some sort of camera and they got Stevie Wonder to endorse it. #1 is was funny as fuck for him to do that (big balls) and #2 they even had him trying to hit tennis balls at the end. He really does have a wonderful sense of humor. Anyways…I just remember how funny that commercial was to me and how loud and deep I laughed. That was a great skit. Why does Saturday Night Live suck booty these days.

OH SHIT! And I bought a SUBWOOFER last nite…my god this shit is sick. 120 extra watts of pure sound below 80hz! If you have the extra few hundred, please do yourself a favor. Pow, how you like me now?
