Top 10 Favorite Tortoise Songs

I first heard Tortoise in fall of 1996 while at my first year at MTSU. I was in Joe’s dorm room. Hey played Millions Now Living Will Never Die on his AIWA stereo. I was instantly hooked. It was jazz. But to label it jazz was a little too narrow. It’s was more that anything goes. It was way more. At that time, I was really not in to lyrics in music. I felt they distracted from the musical content. I still feel this way a lot of the time. But this band completely spoke to me. And changed my life and outlook on how music should be constructed. And yes, Johnny Machine remains a favorite drummer to this day. Recognize.

  • God, you and Johnny Machine. Not surprised in the slightest about “Cornpone Brunch.”

  • I’ve been trying to convince any and all family, friends, random people with ears to give Tortoise (and my other favorite, Mogwai) a listen for years now. Standards and All Around You are probably my top two albums, at least as far as frequency of play, followed closely by their first. The new box set is excellent too, though I haven’t gotten into the remixes disc all that much so far.

This is going to sound nutty, but our first cat _loved_ the first Tortoise album. Almost every time that we played the disc, he would come from anywhere in the house, plunk himself down in front of the speakers, and just zone out.

  • Love that SHJ Galapagos remix. Great list!

  • When I lived with cats they loved Tortoise, too.

Maybe they encode cat nip into their cds.
